  • Description: Provider: - Institution: - Data provided by Europeana Collections- Medieval copper alloy knopped mace-head. Studies of copper alloy mace-heads agree a broad date range of between 11th and 14th century, with some central European examples beginning in use as early as the 9th century. The function of these is objects is not entirely clear and although they may have their origins as offensive weapons, the knopped variety of mace-head appears to have evolved into an object used as a ceremonial or ecclesiastical staff fitting. This example is fairly small and would certainly seem to fit the latter use better. The body of the ‘mace-head’ is a solid barrel shape with a flat base and top, both of which have iron staining on them suggesting that the object was possibly once attached to an iron shaft or staff. Around the centre of the body there are 6 equidistant conical knops. The mace-head weighs 87.9g and measures 27.1mm in length and 36.4mm in diameter.- All metadata published by Europeana are available free of restriction under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication.
