  • Description: Polymers and polymer composites have the advantages of weight savings, high specific mechanical properties and good corrosion resistance which make them outstanding materials. On the downside, manufacturing costs can be very high, they can reach up to 60% of the total cost. Consequently, new economic manufacturing concepts will be increasingly appreciated in the future. As illustrated in Figure 1, several alternative routes and novel material preform types are being investigated for manufacture of thermoplastic-based parts [1, 2].
