He was the son of a market gardener who feued 7 acres locally. During a short period the farmer poet composed a wealth of songs and poems. He died in Dumfries of heart disease aged only 37 years. This kitchen is world famous, for opposite this fireplace is the recessed bed in which the Poet was born, the first child of William and Agnes Burnes. Inside the kitchen of the Poet's birthplace in Alloway is the focal point of the room, the fireplace, with oven attached.
