  • Description: Provider: - Institution: - Data provided by Europeana Collections- A rim sherd of Midlands Yellow ware pottery (79.5mm x 31mm; thickness: 22mm; weight: 40.41g). A hard-fired earthenware with internal (and partly external) lead glaze which fired to a yellow colour while in an oxidising atmosphere. The main fabric has a creamy pink colour with relatively frequent small inclusions of red and black grit.Midlands Yellow ware can be seen in a variety of vessel forms including butter pots which are cylindrical jars in a variety of sizes with distinctive rim profiles made for transporting butter from farmer to consumer (D. A. Ford, 1999).Despite Midlands Yellow ware being made in Staffordshire, it has its origins in the Midland White wares of the 13th-15th centuries. It is recognised as a distinct ware from the 16th century, though it displays no new technology. Kiln centres in the Midlands include Ticknall, Derbyshire and the Nuneaton area in Warwickshire (which was in decline from the end of the 16th century) (D. A. Ford & D. Barker, 1999).- All metadata published by Europeana are available free of restriction under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication.
