  • Description: Provider: - Institution: - Data provided by Europeana Collections- A corroded cast copper-alloy zoomorphic strap-fitting of late early-medieval/Romanesque date (c. 11/12th century). The object is formed of a solidly moulded beast's head, with a rectangular loop emerging from one end. The gaping jaws of the creature are joined with a rounded bar to create a small loop at this end. Other than this loop the lower surface of the artefact is flat. The broadly rectangular loop at the other end measures 16.6 x 7.95 x 3.1mm, with an internal gap up to 10.35mm in length. On its upper surface it is steeply bevelled both externally and internally. There is a constriction between the loop and the body of the object (the animal head), a waist c. 8.0mm in width. The animal head has a high point at the eyebrow ridge (Th.: 8.3mm), beyond which are moulded eyes. Behind are thin, moulded elongated ears just above the base that extend back beyond the head. The snout appears faceted. The beast perhaps represents a dragon, although this is speculation. The artefact has not been readily paralleled in the literature or on this database by the recorder and its precise function remains unclear. The metal is of a red-brown colour overlain largely by variable green corrosion. There has been a small loss to one of the corners of the rectangular loop, but the object otherwise seems complete.- All metadata published by Europeana are available free of restriction under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication.
