  • Description: Provider: - Institution: - Data provided by Europeana Collections- A damaged cast copper-alloy buckle with integral plate, probably of late early-medieval date. The frame D shaped with a trefoilate, sub-zoomorphic protrusion at the outer edge. The lip is recessed on its lower surface, with a central pin groove on the upper, internally. The frame is bevelled externally on the upper surface, bevelling echoed internally on the lower. Most of the frame has been lost between the plate and the protrusion to one side; the protrusion has been bent down slightly as a result of old damage.The plate is narrower (W.: 13.6mm), broadly rectangular in form. Adjacent to the frame is a perforation around which the pin would have been looped; the corroded remains of the iron pin are in and around the hole. There is a short rectangular moulding either side on the upper surface in the transverse plane at the junction of frame and plate. The plate is split to accommodate a strap. Towards its terminal is a rivet hole in which the corroded remains of the iron rivet are still in place; corrosion product extends on both surface across this end of the plate. The upper surface is decorated a stippled border which follows the edge as well as the pin hole. There is possible further symmetrical, lozengiform decoration within the field within, now obscured. The buckle has corroded to a red-brown colour largely covered with a variable green patina.
