  • Description: Conventional coated paper-making requires multiple steps on separate pieces of equipment; nexgen is the first North American application of an innovative on-machine coated paper-making process that combines paper-making with on-machine coating, drying, and surface finishing. This on-line process allows MacMillan Bloedel to produce high-performance paper at a lower cost than the traditional off-machine process. Moreover, total capital investment in nexgen is less than half the estimated $450 million needed for conventional light-weight coated (LWC) paper equipment and processes. The post-conversion LWC process uses about one-third less fibre than a conventional sheet, and Alberni Specialties continues to operate well within the limits of one of the strictest environmental permits in Canada. Dubbed the 'nexgen' project because it represents the next generation of paper products for MacMillan Bloedel and the next generation of paper-making for the coated paper industry, the rebuilt No. 5 machine is one of only five in the world to use advanced on-line paper-making technology to produce high-performance paper at a lower cost.
