  • Description: At the collection level, preventive conservation includes many factors: * Monitoring and controlling the environment to protect collections from light, ultraviolet radiation, high or low temperatures, high or low relatíve humidity, and pests * Ensuring that appropriate security measures and insurance contracts are in place to protect the collection from theft and vandalism * Planning for emergencies (including fires, floods or leaks, damaging storms, and terrorist attacks) and training library staff to respond efficiently in case of disaster * Providing housekeeping guidelines so collections are protected from dust and dirt, overcrowded shelving, or damaging bookends * Creating boxes, folders, or other containers that protect books, documents, or photographs without contributing to their chemical deterioration * Surveying the collections to determine which materials are the most vulnerable and in need of conservation treatment or rehousing * Reviewing collections to be digitized or otherwise reformatted to be sure that they will not be damaged by handling * Training library staff and researchers to handle books and documents safely In order to be able to undertake both kinds of work, conservators must study multiple subjects: general and organic chemistry, materials science, art history, studio art, and analytical methods. The most elaborate restoring has been done only on priceless items. Since labor is always by far the greatest expense in all such work, the entire effort has been made to make the work as lasting as possible. After years of research at the Library Company of Philadelphia and elsewhere, he was able to identify Robert Aitken, who had emigrated from Scotland to Philadelphia, as the binder of many of the Society's earliest books. Because of his interest in original bookbindings and the historical evidence they contain, Spawn deprecated the Library's long-standing tradition of rebinding its books in historically inaccurate bindings. In 2006, the APS established a conservation internship, which was renamed the Willman Spawn Conservation Internship in 2009. Since the internship was founded, sixteen budding conservators have passed through the Conservation Department to be educated in book and paper housing and repair.
