Description:
New technologies are being implemented, including metagenomics and metaproteomics, and gradually interest is shifting towards functional analyses rather than only monitoring microbial composition. Microbial therapies are an important tool for modifying the intestinal microbiome. Apart from fecal microbiota transplantation, specific microbes have a long history of use and some are marketed as probiotics since they are assumed to have a beneficial health effect. This chapter focuses on the microbiome with its functions and how these affect gut health. Moreover, attention is devoted to how the personalization of the intestinal microbiome affects the reaction to diet and how this can be used in future dietary or other therapies that target the intestinal microbiome. The function of the microbiome is addressed at different levels by analysis of mRNA (metatranscriptomics), proteins (metaproteomics), and metabolites (metabolomics). Dietary and host‐derived substrates are included in the global analysis of metabolites and proteins, providing useful links with real functions.
