  • Description: The installation of a distributed control system upgrade at Container Corp. of America's Brewton, Alabama, mill has provided the facility with a more stable fiberline operation, as well as better control of its fiber mixing capabilities. The Brewton mill is a large, integrated multi-product mill producing 1,500 tpd of bleached paperboard and mottled white linerboard. The digester house has 11 direct steam (high and low pressure) batch digesters cooking 3 grades of hardwood and softwood kraft pulp. The new control system provides fully automatic charging, cooking, and production mix scheduling, as well as statistical kappa number control. In addition to the control applications, a new project concept was implemented by the mill for the batch digester project. Instead of designating one individual to be responsible for overall specification and installation of the project, a team with members from production, electrical, instrumentation, and engineering was formed to complete these tasks.
