  • Description: In 2002, total paper and board production in mainland China was reported to be 37.8 million tonnes (an 18.1% increase over 2001). A goal of 50 million-60 million tonnes/yr total production has been set for the year 2010. By that time, domestic virgin wood pulp production will have doubled, with pulpwood supplied from domestic plantations and supplemented by imported wood chips and pulpwood. Efforts will have to be taken to promote domestic wastepaper recycling. The amount of wood pulp and secondary fiber used in paper production has been increasing over the years, and the share of non-wood pulp in the overall papermaking furnish will probably drop to less than 25% by 2010. Therefore, the primary concern will be the availability of the needed fiber resources to be able to meet the targeted production.
