  • Description: There is a productivity paradox: The more companies try to boost productivity, the more elusive the goal becomes. Before implementing any strategy - whether it is downsizing, TQM, or business process reengineering - it is necessary to go back to the basics and understand profit and productivity. Executives need new skills to create an environment for qualitative decision making - decision making that is both effective (satisfying the customer) and efficient (doing things right, not just the right things). Efficient in the short run is to make the process routine; in the long run, it involves transforming the organization from mechanistic behaviors to an organic, integrated team. To do this, management must create a climate of cooperation and communication based on mutual trust and respect.
