  • Description: The main objective of this study is to analyze the beliefs of first- & last-year students of the Languages & Literature Course at two universities -- UNI 1 & UNI 2 -- concerning the teaching of English as an international language. We discuss concepts regarding the hegemony of the English language in the globalized world, such as linguistic imperialism (Phillipson, 1992), the post-modern perspective (Pennycook, 1994), & the ideas of Holborow (1999). We also bring forward the concept of "inner circle," "outer circle" & "expanding circle" (Kachru, 1985) & educational approaches that take into account the expansion of the English language in the world (McKay, 2002; Canagarajah, 1999, 2005). The results show that students have conflicting perceptions; they crave for an education that prepares them for globalization but at the same time they fear the loss of their cultural identity.
