  • Description: The successful integration of immigrants into a new society is based on their attainment of several basic needs, including access to adequate, suitable and affordable housing. While this has long been a concern in Canadian cities, such as Vancouver, Toronto, and Montréal, it is also increasingly an issue in growing mid‐sized cities such as Kelowna, in the interior of British Columbia. While Kelowna's real estate market is one of the most expensive in the country, there is little published data or literature on the housing experiences of immigrants in the city. This study examines the housing experiences and stresses of a small group of immigrants in Kelowna's rental housing market. This study uses data from five focus groups with 34 new immigrants and 20 interviews with key informants, conducted in Kelowna in summer 2008. The evidence indicates that for this group of immigrant newcomers, the housing search process in Kelowna's rental housing market met with significant barriers in locating affordable rental housing. Of these barriers, the most commonly cited were: (a) high housing costs; (b) lack of reliable housing information, including lack of access to organizations that provide housing help (government or not); and (c) prejudice by landlords based on the immigrants' ethnic and racial background. This study points to the need for more comparative studies on the housing experiences of immigrants in mid‐sized cities in Canada to better understand which groups of immigrants are more successful than others in finding affordable housing in these mid‐sized cities, and why. L'établissement de nouveaux immigrants dans une ville de taille moyenne: une étude de cas sur les obstacles au logement et les stratégies d'adaptation à Kelowna, Colombie‐Britannique La réussite de l'intégration des immigrants dans la société d'accueil repose sur la satisfaction de leurs besoins essentiels, dont l'accès à un logement de qualité, approprié et abordable. Cette préoccupation pour laquelle les grandes villes canadiennes comme Vancouver, Toronto et Montréal ont longtemps été confrontées est un enjeu de plus en plus important pour des villes moyennes en croissance comme Kelowna dans la région intérieure de la Colombie‐Britannique. Les prix de l'immobilier à Kelowna ont atteint des niveaux parmi les plus élevés au pays. Cependant, il existe peu de données ou d'études sur les expériences en matière de logement des immigrants dans la ville. Cette étude porte sur le marché locatif de Kelowna et les expériences en matière de logement et les pressions vécues par un petit groupe d'immigrants. Pour recueillir les données, des entrevues ont été menées à Kelowna au cours de l'été 2008 auprès de cinq groupes de discussion composés de 34 immigrants récents et de 20 informateurs clés. Selon les données obtenues sur la démarche de recherche d'un logement à Kelowna, ces personnes récemment immigrées ont dû faire face à d'importants obstacles pour trouver un logement locatif abordable. Les obstacles suivants étaient mentionnés par la plupart des répondants: a) les prix élevés du loyer; b) le manque d'informations fiables en matière de logement, incluant un manque d'accès aux organismes (gouvernementaux ou non) offrant des services de soutien au logement; et c) la discrimination ethnique ou raciale pratiquée par les propriétaires contre les immigrants. Cette étude souligne la nécessité de considérer de manière plus globale les expériences en matière de logement des immigrants dans les villes moyennes canadiennes afin de mieux comprendre pourquoi certains groupes d'immigrants réussissent là où d'autres échouent à se trouver un logement abordable dans ces villes moyennes.
