Description: Supplementing his basic academic studies in the Department of Social Relations at Harvard, he attended the Summer School of Linguistics at the University of Michigan in 1957, spent six months at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London in 1959, and did postdoctoral work in South Asian Studies at the University of Chicago in 1961-62. The wide range of topics they covered included social and ideological change in Sri Lanka (1963), the rituals of Buddhism and their structural importance (1964a, 1964b), the impacts of Western education in Ceylon, Westernization and modernization, democracy and social sciences in developed and developing countries, the caste system (1971), Indian immigrants in Canada, family life in Jamshedpur, employment policies, changes in Sikh families in British Columbia (Ames and Inglis 1973-74), and South Asian women's experiences in Canada.
