Description:
Deprived of diplomatic recognition by everyone who matters, Taiwan is forced to court the media and spend tens of millions of dollars a year on advertising, lobbying and public relations. The usual response is a yawn. The stand-off with China has been going on for most of this century, and little seems to have changed. But every now and then there are days when the world suddenly remembers Taiwan is as likely as any to spark the third world war. China has made it clear that it stands ready to invade if ever Taiwan declares independence (as opposed to simply practicing it quietly in the usual way). America has made it clear that it is ready to defend Taiwan, as long as it does not declare independence. Some in Taiwan have made it clear that they intend to do just that one day.
