  • Description: The use of flooded water bodies by duck broods was studied in one simulated beaverpond and eight beaver-influenced ponds. Brood censuses were made both before and during inundation in these areas, and eight unaffected ponds were used as controls. In the man-made flowage, the distribution and biomass of wetland plants and the density of available aquatic invertebrates were studied. In the beaver-influenced ponds, the use by waterfowl broods was significantly greater during flooding than before inundation; no changes occurred in the control areas. In the first year of inundation, the simulated flowage produced a great amount of duck food in the water column — mainly large cladocerans. The density of benthic invertebrates increased during the second year of flooding and remained high during the third. The number of emergent insects was highest in the second year of inundation. The results of the study suggest that in barren regions beaver ponds, with their prosperous food regime, provide important habitats for rearing waterfowl broods.
