Description: The Second IAWPRC Symposium on Forest Industry Wastewaters concentrated on two main fields of the scientific challenge: biological treatment and environmental effects. These two aspects of the pulp and paper industry were discussed in close collaboration between engineers, chemists, biologists and limnologists. During the Symposium there was much discussion on whether the key role of halogenated organic compounds has now been discovered. Another key point was the role of biological indicators in the environmental investigations. The accumulation of toxic or otherwise physiologically active compounds and the changes both in individuals and at the population level were discussed.
