Description:
// ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: After the 1926 Papal condemnation of the Action Française, a new generation of French bishops, opposed to the Maurras movement, shifted towards the centre and Christian Democracy. The Vichy Regime put an end to this drift as the pro-Vichy bishops (some of them were WWI veterans) strongly condemned the Resistance movement. After the war, the episcopate can be described as a "dissident elite" split from the Christian-democratic Popular Republican Movement. The paper describes this evolution. Reproduced by permission of Bibliothèque de Sciences Po
