Description:
// ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: The issue of the bishops'authority in nineteenth-century France can only be understood by a careful reading of the Concordat agreement together with the additional Organic Articles. After the French Revolution, the Concordat notoriously extends the domain reserved to the bishop for the government of the local Churches, contributing to reinforce his power. This centralizing evolution can be shown through two procedures: the right to appoint parish priests to ecclesiastical posts and the use by the bishop of his power of juridiction. These Concordat articles create oppositions among the low clergy, denouncing the authoritarian attitude of the episcopate. Yet, at the same time, the "Organic Articles" limit the fields of the bishops' authority by submitting the bishops' gathering, the bishops' collegial decisions and their correspondence with Rome to a governmental authorization. The Concordat system introduces a new relation to the ecclesiastical authority in the Catholic Church in France, empowering the bishops and controlling them at the same time.
