Description:
The mportance of well-crafted problem statements in attracting innovative solutions through crowdsourcing platforms is discussed. The authors conducted research on problem statements posted on an online crowdsourcing platform and identified five techniques that engage freelancers and increase idea submissions: personalizing the problem, challenging solvers to surpass the status quo, asking engaging questions, highlighting tensions to be resolved, and explaining what customers need. The text also highlights four approaches to avoid when writing problem statements: going negative, specifying a particular market, describing customers too narrowly, and staying anonymous. The authors recommend using a combination of two or three engaging techniques in problem statements to attract more submissions.
