  • Description: Chinese English learners' scope of lexical planning in oral sentence production was examined in two picture naming tasks. The results showed that low-proficiency learners adopted a strategy of linear incrementality for lexical planning in sentence production regardless of time pressure, whereas high-proficiency learners selected linear incrementality under no time pressure but adopted both linear and hierarchical incrementalities under time pressure. The results suggest that two non-linguistic factors, namely, language proficiency and time pressure, affect the lexical planning processes of English learners' language production, which can be explained by the usage-based theories.
