  • Description: Adolescence is a unique stage in life, marked by both immense possibilities and potential vulnerabilities. Around the world, there is interest in the importance of meaningfully engaging adolescents in their health care, in order to effectively and holistically support them to grow and develop healthily. It is widely recognized that the predominant determinants of health for populations are not those that were traditionally conceptualized as "medical", but rather those forces that we have come to term as the social determinants of health. Here, van Buuren et al emphasize the possibilities of identifying the social determinants of health for which instrumental interventions (e.g. income support, housing) are accessible and can be implemented. Other determinants of health which have considerable and pervasive potential relevance, and which require further understanding, such as gender, race, exposure to adverse childhood experiences and others, also need to be addressed.
