Description: The publication of a complete psalter and two prayer books by the International Commission for English in the Liturgy (ICEL) in 1995 evoked a mixed response among the critics. A member of the ICEL describes them as pretty good while a poet finds the language of the hymns banal. Poets suggest that the language of religious poems should be potent and musical in order to evoke the emotions of the reader. ICEL, however, deserves credit for the publication, since critics find the translations from original Hebrew are more accurate than anything available in English until now.
