  • Description: Game-based learning has been an important issue in educational settings for decades. In the past decades, owing to the rapid advancement of computer, network and mobile technologies, many equational theories have been reexamined and applied to the technology-upported learning environments from new perspectives. It has become an important duty for educators and researchers to face such a paradigm shiftof educational technology. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to analyze the advancement and trends of game-based learning in the globe based on reviewing the academic publications in 1997 -2016 and our past experiences of conducting game-based learning approaches in school settings. It is found that, in the past two decades, the number of game-based learning applications is increasing at a fast pace. In particular, the recent 10 years, Taiwan scholars have reported significant achievements in promoting game-based learning.
