  • Description: In January 1515, Charles, Prince of Castile, was declared of age; four years later he was the most powerful sovereign in the Western world. At the same time, Thomas More was starting a diplomatic career which would lead him to gain his King's favour. In the complex maze of sixteenth century diplomacy, the paths of these two men crossed. Insofar as their interests followed at times divergent - or even confronting - lines, they did share two main concerns: the Turks and the Lutheran Reformation. In the present paper I will focus on the period that extends from 1515 to 1526, a decade which was marked (in general terms) by the friendship between England and the Emperor, as both sides perceived the benefits they could obtain from their alliance in order to isolate France. Some documents and reports, albeit scarce and scattered, may help us to elucidate the manner in which these two men, More and Charles, thought of each other.
