  • Description: Here, Bar takes up a linguistic tradition of language cultivation studies that has been maintained by a quite small number of scientists since about 1960. He argues for a more open linguistic attitude towards questions that interest the public (e.g. the future of the German language regarding the European integration, the international standing of English etc.), but he also respects the linguistic reservations against the word Sprachpflege (language cultivation) and discusses alternative expressions, such as Sprachkultivierung and Spracharbeit. Yet terms like these, although they may be useful in many cases, are not fully synonymous with Sprachpflege. He therefore suggests to keep Sprachpflege as a scientific term as well, provided that it is clearly defined: as a judging, yet a scientific and/or scientifically respectable consideration of language questions.
