  • Description:   In this qualitative study, I discuss how cultural festivals can serve as dialogic spaces for intercultural learning and understanding. With a specific focus on the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, I begin by considering an exploration of the festival organizers' visions of the educational role of the festival, the value of traditional arts in learning, and the importance of authentic cultural presentation. What emerges is a common vision and desire to offer safe spaces and authentic opportunities for and facilitate access to intercultural interaction and dialogue. Organizers believe that these opportunities can lead to learning and understanding. Additionally, I offer a briefcase study of the Northern Ireland program at the 2007 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, which specifically focuses on a joint performance of Catholic and Protestant musicians and the creation of large-scale mural art at the festival. This specific festival program offered visitors an opportunity to experience the once competing cultures of the newly united Northern Ireland. In many ways, the festival created a unique space for visitors, artists, and cultural representatives to interact with each other for the first time in their histories. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
