  • Description: Date estimated. "Dramatic Russian plan of Nizhny Novgorod, published in St Petersburg for the All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition that opened in May 1896. This event was a significant milestone in the cultural, industrial, and economic life of the country, marking the coronation of Nicholas II, the last sovereign of the Romanov family. The plan underscores Nicholas II?s emphasis on the development of industry and science during his reign. It presents the layout and infrastructure of Nizhny Novgorod and its Makarievskaya Fair, Russian largest wholesale and retail trading event until the 1917 Revolution. It attracted hundreds of thousands of guests, including the Tsar and his family, representatives of the Court, members of the government, and high-ranking foreign guests. By the time of the exhibition?s opening in Nizhny Novgorod, several significant developments had taken place. The first electric tram in Russia was launched, funiculars were arranged to transport passengers from the lower part of the city to the upper part (Kremlin and Pokhvalinsky), and the city drama theater, the district court, the Volga-Kamsky Bank stock exchange, and hotels were built. Additionally, a high-speed steamship line was opened, connecting the upper part of the city with its riverside part. All those are plotted on the plan, providing a comprehensive view of the city?s development at the time. This map was published by Alexey Ilyin's Cartographic Establishment, a famed patent holder map maker based in St Petersburg. All text in Russian Cyrillic. Condition: bright colors, executed through award-winning techniques of lithography. Some defects along the antique folds, with oxidation of small loses, especially in the lower section. Extremely rare: no copy found in WorldCat or Rarebookhub." (Bolivar Old Prints, 2024)
