Daye, above the imprint on last page. "The sixtenth booke of the Elementes of geometrie, added by Flussas": verso leaf 445- recto leaf 458; "Flussas, of mixed and regular solids": verso leaf 458- recto leaf 463. English short title catalogue, S106699 Thomas-Stanford, C. Early editions of Euclid’s Elements, 41 Wardhaugh, B. Euclid in print, 1482–1703, London 1570 Luborsky & Ingram. Engl. illustrated books, 1536-1603, 10560 Purchase; Robertson; 19501230 LHL copy with printed bookplate of William H. Robertson, Ltd, bookseller, indicating it was purchased by "private treaty" from the estate of Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872). With ownership inscription "R Darley" on titlepage. LHL copy in calf over wooden boards. Front and rear covers with three blind rollstamps in nested frames, with classical heads and vegetal design. Clasp remnants on front and rear boards. Spine with five raised bands with calf label in second panel with title "EUCLIDE'S GEOMETRIE" stamped in gold. (318 x 218 x 72 mm) MoKL Conserved 2019-09-03 Center for the Conservation of Art and Historic Artifacts Locally consolidate the desiccated leather with hydroxypropyl cellulose (Klucel G) in ethanol where needed in areas to be mended. Some darkening of the leather may occur. Readhere lifting areas of the leather over the top, fore-edge, and bottom edges of the boards with gelatin. If needed, reinforce these areas with acrylic-toned mulberry paper and a mixture of wheat starch paste and PVA. Please note: some areas of the wooden boards will remain exposed. Release the loose leaves at the front mechanically. Hinge the detached leaves to the text block with mulberry paper, acrylic-toned if necessary, and wheat starch paste or a mixture of wheat starch paste and methyl cellulose, taking care to surface clean the area to be hinged with a polyurethane cosmetic sponge prior to hinging. Lift the top and bottom spine panels and lift the leather at the head and tail of the spine edge of the cover boards mechanically in preparation to reattach the boards. Reattach the boards by adhering ramie fiber tapes with gelatin or another appropriate adhesive that extends from the spine of the volume to the cover boards beneath the lifted leather. Readhere the lifted material with gelatin or another appropriate adhesive. Mend the joints with acrylic-toned mulberry paper and a mixture of wheat starch paste and PVA. Mend the interior hinges with mulberry paper, acrylic-toned if necessary, and wheat starch paste. Selectively clean the leaves with polyurethane cosmetic sponges and/or a soft brush to reduce surface soil, avoiding sensitive media. Embedded grime will not be reduced. Relax creased areas of the overslips between leaves 312-353 mechanically and/or with controlled applications of moisture. Lightly readhere lifting areas of the overslips where appropriate with a mixture of wheat starch paste and methyl cellulose. Mend vulnerable tears to the leaves with mulberry paper, acrylic-toned if necessary, and a mixture of wheat starch paste and methyl cellulose. Locally consolidate the cover mends and leather abrasions with a mixture of an acrylic polymer and wax emulsion, Klucel G, and ethanol.
