  • Description: The following reflexions on the nature and function of the cabinets de lecture I should be understood against a background familiar to students of modem cultural history, namely the exponential growth in the number of readers in most European countries between the end of the 18th century and the end of the 19th. While accurate figures are hard to come by, one may safely assert that in 1790, the majority of French men and women were unable to read; and that, by 1890, this situation was reversed.
