Description:
Audit procedures, both internal and external, are extremely significant for the right preparation, reporting and use of companies’ financial statements. External audit is mandatory for listed companies and so, it is expected that they report more reliable results. However, it is observed that earnings management is a technique used to present more convenient results aiming to manipulate the expectations of the financial statement users, such as banks, in favor of the company. This study uses statistical data from a selected sample of one hundred and seventy three (173) firms listed on the Athens Stock Exchange, for the duration of 8 financial years (2015-2022) and uses the modified Jones Model in order to define the connection of audit procedures with earnings manipulation. This study is extremely important as it is related to the accurate and reliable presentation and use of financial statements, the most representative image of a company. Earnings management is a common issue that violates this reliability and internal and external audit are the corrective solution. It is important to restrict this phenomenon and create a healthier economic environment. The mandatory application of external audit procedures for the listed companies is expected to restrict earnings management and so, this highlights the importance of audit. Furthermore, given the fact that the past four years the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) affected not only the financial world but all human activities and habits, it is important to observe the consequences of this phenomenon and compare the existence of earnings management before and after its spread.
