  • Description: Cyclobutanones of formula in which R4 is H, an alkyl radical or a cycloalky radical; each of R and R3 is H or an alkyl group; or, when R4 is H, R and R3 together form the group of formula n being 1 or 2 or together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached form a 1,2-cycloalyklene group; or when R4 is H and R is H, R3 is the group of formula m being 1, 2, 3 or 4; R1 and R2 in the above formulae are alkyl groups and -CQ is the group , may be used as a plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride. The cyclobutanones are preferably present in an amount of 0.1-2.0% by weight.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of Formula (I) in which R4 is M, and alkyl radical or a cycloalkyl radical, each of R and R3 is H or an alkyl group, or when R4 is H, R2 and R3 together form the group of Formula (Ia) n being 1 or 2, or together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached form a 1,2-cyclo-alkylene group; or when R4 is H and R is H, R3 is the group (Ib) m being 1, 2, 3 or 4; R1 and R2 in each of the above formulae are alkyl groups and -CQ is the group They may be prepared by reacting a ketene of formula R1(R2)C=O with an olefine of formula R3(R4)C=CHR. Cyclobutanones containing a fused-on 1,2-cycloalkylene group may be prepared by reacting a dialkyl ketene with a cyclic olefin and those in which R and R3 together form the group (Ia) may be obtained by reacting a dialkyl ketene with a cyclic diene of Formula (IV). If desired, mixtures of olefins may be used as starting materials. The ketones of the invention may be reduced to the corresponding alcohols either by treatment with an hydride, e.g. lithium hydride, aluminium hydride or sodium borohydride or by catalytic hydrogenation. These alcohols may be treated with sulphuric acid to give a sulphate which is then converted to a sodium sulphate salt which may be used as a surfactant, e.g. 2-butyl-2-ethyl-3,3-dimethyl-cyclobutanol may be converted to its sodium sulphate derivative.ALSO:Compounds of formula in which R4 is H, an alkyl radical or a cycloalkyl radical, each of R and R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl group or, when R4 is H, R and R3 together form the group of formula n being 1 or 2, or together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a 1,2-cycloalkylene group; or, when R4 is H and R is H, R3 is the group m being 1, 2, 3, 4; R1 and R2 in each of the above formulae are alkyl groups and is the group -CHOH, may be used as defoaming agents in the manufacture of paper from wood pulp.
