  • Description: Currently the Marine Corps has a very decentralized, non standard system by which it repurposes and disposes of uniforms. Since these uniforms are still within their service life, they could be refurbished and redistributed back to Entry Level Training (ELT) commands for reissue to new trainees within the Marine Corps. This method is the focus of this research. Over the course of this research, Store Managers and Officers in Charge were surveyed to determine the details of the present day uniform procurement and disposal process. Quantitative and qualitative data was acquired from these individuals in order to identify the total amount of uniforms that were collected and disposed of in order to determine if there is a possible cost savings for the Marine Corps by reissuing some uniforms or by refurbishing others. This data was analyzed and the results show that not only can the process itself be improved upon, but also that the Marine Corps stands to save substantial dollars, more than $3 million annually, if this process of reverse logistics were to be implemented. Additionally, it would reduce the United States Marine Corps (USMC) uniform procurement costs annually at a minimum of 7%. This reissuing and repurposing of USMC uniforms could be a solution for the USMC to reduce costs and thereby optimize its current uniform inventory needs.
