    UNKNOWN GEOLOGICAL SAMPLE

  • Description: Provider: - Institution: - Data provided by Europeana Collections- A piece of soft but well bedded limestone, apparently natural, but recorded because it is an "exotic" stone, not naturally occuring in the findspot area. It is sub-rectangular in plan and section. The edges are soft and rounded and there are some areas of pitting where there are small holes, probably caused by softer elements in the stone disolving. It has been suggested to be a hammerstone, but doubts have been cast on whether the stone is hard or strong enough for this purpose. Its prescence in the area may be related to the building of the nearby reservoir. It is 98mm long, 31.6mm wide and 17.73mm thick. 67.99g.- All metadata published by Europeana are available free of restriction under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication.
