Description:
The paper deals with the study of the crosslinguistic influence of English on the acquisition of Italian and French. The main objective of the paper was to examine the relationship and influence of English as a first foreign language (L2) on the acquisition of Italian and French as a second or third foreign language (L3/L4) in order to encourage multilingualism through linking the existing knowledge of English with that of Italian and French. At the center of the research are two groups of students in elementary school with Croatian as a mother tongue (Jl), English as a first foreign language (.12) and Italian and French as a second and third foreign languages, which they have studied simultaneously since the fourth grade. The paper consists of a theoretical and research part. The students of the sixth, seventh and eighth grade took part in the research. The results obtained for students who are learning English and Italian were different from those who are also learning French. The paper has served both as an incentive for research and independent learning, aiming at the development of the crosslinguistic awareness and lifelong learning as part of the new education reform.
