The leather was consolidated locally with hydroxypropyl cellulose (Klucel G) in ethanol. 2. The edges of the closed textblock, the front outermost leave, and areas to be mended were selectively surface cleaned with additive-free polyurethane cosmetic sponges and a soft brush. 3. The textblock was released from the cover by cutting the paper hollow, interior hinge, and sewing supports along the back joint. 4. The spine of the textblock was cleaned of linings, endbands, and adhesive residue mechanically and with poultices of methyl cellulose. 5. The volume was disbound by cutting the sewing threads and separated the sections. 6. The pressure-sensitive tape carrier was removed at the front with a heated spatula and adhesive residue was reduced with solvents. 7. Vulnerable tears and losses to the leaves were mended with acrylic-toned and un-toned mulberry paper and a mixture of wheat starch paste and methyl cellulose. 8. Vulnerable spine folds were reinforced with mulberry paper and a mixture of wheat starch paste. 9. The flyleaves were hinged to the outermost sections with mulberry paper and wheat starch paste. 10. The sections were re-sewn through the folds with unbleached linen thread over recessed cords, using original sewing stations. 11. New hand-embroidered endbands were sewn over a parchment core using acrylic-toned unbleached linen thread (25/3) mimicking color of the original. The original endbands were stabilized with wheat starch paste and mulberry paper and placed in an inert polyester film L-sleeve with a sheet of alkaline paper for return to the client.12. The spine of the textblock was lined with two extended layers of mulberry paper and wheat starch paste. 13. The cover joints were split along the spine edges of the board. 14. The cover boards were split at the spine edges of the board mechanically in preparation for a reback.15. The cover was reattached by adhereing the new sewing supports, mulberry paper hinges, between the split boards with wheat starch paste.16. The volume was rebacked with acrylic-toned cotton textile with a mixture of wheat starch paste and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc).17. The split boards were re-adhered with wheat starch paste.18. The original spine piece was adhered to the new spine with a mixture of wheat starch paste and PVAc.19. The joints were reinforced with acrylic-toned mulberry paper and a mixture of wheat starch paste and PVAc.20. The leather and cover mends were locally consolidated with a mixture of an acrylic polymer and wax emulsion, Klucel G, and ethanol. 21. The inner hinges were reinforced with acrylic-toned mulberry paper and wheat starch paste.22. A thin sheet of alkaline, Microchamber paper was inserted at the front of the volume to help buffer the acidity of the newspaper clipping. This copy of the first edition is registered with the Darwin Census, #10086, January 2010. For more information go to Darwin Online or contact darwin.census@gmail.com.
