  • Description: The Arkhangelsk region is one of the leading forest industry centers of Russia. The region possesses significant chemical and mechanical wood processing facilities, producing about one third of the pulp and cardboard, also up to 10% of sawn timber, paper and fuel pellets of the total volumes in Russia. One of the forest industry's problems is a historic underdevelopment of an infrastructure, in particular - lack of transport links. Due to low population rate, the density of the land transportation system is minor, so in the some areas the waterborne transportation of wood products is an exclusively available method. As a rule, the small and medium-scale rivers are situated in these areas. The state of exploration data of these rivers is insufficient for planning of waterborne timber transportation in the corresponding areas. In order to determine a fundamental possibility of raft floating and barge haulage, the parameters of the cross profiles in the limitative section lines are demandable. The transporting potential evaluation and, moreover - calculation of timber transportation capability for those rivers using the available methods, are this day impossible. So, the task to find out the empiric dependences accurately describing the actual river profile is emerging. Design characteristics are obtained using mathematical notations interrelating the hydrological parameters, including the channel data and flow characteristics. The following small and medium-scale rivers of the Northern Dvina watershed area: Pinega, Uftjuga, Ustja and Vaga - were studied. The article describes the design procedure for analytic dependences that simulate the cross profile of a river precisely based on minimal information content available. The results of the mathematical analysis of the cross profiles of small and medium-scale rivers of the Northern Dvina catchment area at the riffle and reach spots are presented.
