Description:
[...] the book reads throughout like an undergraduate term paper writ large, where random facts on file cards are transcribed into the paper with only the barest concern for how the factoids relate to one another. [...] random collections of facts are exemplified in this not untypical, randomly chosen paragraph: Folk song figured prominently in the culture of the colonists. Besides popularized church hymns, the majority of them cultivated rural songs (chansons) and dances derived from the troubadour tradition (35).
