  • Description: The ability of students of differing national origins to meet writing proficiency standards in English set by US colleges was evaluated in a study involving undergraduates at the U of Florida. Academic records of students from Latin America, the Middle East, & southeast Asia (total N = 79) were examined. Among the questions asked were (1) What were scores on the state-mandated English essay exam? (2) How many times did they take the exam before passing? Grade-point averages after two years of undergraduate study & whether students took a nonrequired writing course were also examined. Results showed that nearly 33% of the students failed the essay exam on the first attempt. Nearly 50% of the southeast Asian students failed the first time. Students who failed the first attempt, no matter their regional origin, generally had a low grade-point average, around C or C+, & had not taken a writing course prior to taking the exam. Nearly 66% of those who failed were transfer students from outside the state or from private institutions.
