  • Description: The church at La Salle-les-Alpes in the Hautes-Alpes department keeps a small sacristy cabinet dating from the seventeenth century. It has a single door, made up of several pieces, comprising a moulded frame in harmony with the surroundings of the front of the cabinet and a central panel with two faces, each of which bears an elaborately carved decoration, in a style and finish clearly different from the rest of the piece. It is obviously a case of an element being reused from elsewhere, with origins and a history that are independent of the cabinet it is now a part of. The presence of some carbon black on the sculpted reliefs and the fact that the two decorations each depict an elementary motif in a mesh-like composition lead to the conclusion that it is a woodblock for printing. The question remains however as to what type of support it was designed to print on, on cloth, for example, for printing on fustian, or on leather for the printing, of the decoration outlines on punched gilt leathers before the application of colour. Arguments in favour of both hypotheses can be put forward. Printed versions of the two decorations have yet to be found, but there are similarities with the patterns on a piece of fustian dating from the sixteenth century and held today at Manchester, in England, and on the painted decor of a Flemish altarpiece dating from the late fifteenth century and to be seen today at Tallinn, in Estonia. This printing panel at La Salle-les-Alpes was probably of Italian origin and seems to date from the sixteenth century, possibly its first half.
