  • Description: Thesis (PhD(Water Engineering))--University of South Australia, 2021. Includes bibliographical references (pages 189-209) The cessation of pulping at a paper mill in south-east South Australia (Australia) in 2012 impacted on the qualities and quantities of wastewaters entering the treatment system, an aerated stabilisation basin (installed in 1993). Major reductions in wastewater volumes and the levels of colour, suspended solids, nutrients as well as biological and chemical oxygen demands in the wastewaters entering the treatment system improved the quality wastewaters in the treatment system. This study aimed to improve the understanding of the changes that occur in paper mill wastewater treatment system that had previously been used for treatment of pulp and paper mill wastewaters. The findings of investigations into the factors such as weather conditions and phycocyanin levels leading to cyanobacterial occurrences in the ASB wastewater treatment system might be used by paper mill managers to inform risk assessment for these occurring in other similar systems.
