[Class 64 (i)] [Also in Groups VIII and XXX] Wood chips, &c., are fed from a hopper by screw-conveyers and by a reciprocating plunger to a chamber 28 and conveyed therefrom and delivered to the inlet of a disc refiner by a succession of screw-conveyer parts 54, 56, 58, 60, 62. Steam, and, if desired, chemicals, may be introduced at 34, the chips being heaped at 96, etc., between successive conveyer parts, which results in prolonged heat treatment, the larger heaps being stirred by agitators 64. Steam pressure is maintained by the plunger, &c., at the feed end and by the use of two valves opening alternately at the outlet from the disc mill.
