Description:
Fibre length: Fibre dimensions play a crucial role in the development of many paper properties. Fibre dimensions, internal structure and surface conditions basically tell the value of the pulp. In early theoretical works, fibre length was assumed to be a factor in almost everything. In formulas describing paper tensile strength, fibre length is included among the other factors. Fibre length alone does not always give enough information for reliable tensile strength estimation, especially in real mill-scale cases. The tensile strength of paper is often more influenced by the other pulp and paper machine characteristics than by fibre length alone. On the other hand, it is a well-established fact that the fibre length of pulp can be used to estimate tearing strength of paper. This has been tested in many research projects, for example in Karenlampi's extensive work on fibre properties, [1] Fig. 1. Table II. Properties of Kajaani FiberLab. Variables measured Fibre length Range 0 - 7.6 mm Resolution 50 microns Fibre width Range 0 - 0.2 mm Resolution 1 micron Fibre cell wall thickness Range 0 - 0.2 mm Resolution 1 micron Values calculated Averages of distributions Selected 6 fractions from population and length-weighted fibre length distributions Coarseness Wood species ratios (2 or 3 components) Measurement principles Fibre length measurement similar to KAJAANI FS-200 Fibre width and cell wall thickness by CCD camera and image analysis Number of fibres measured Fibre length: 20 000 - 30 000 fibres per short analysis Fibre width and cell wall thickness: 1000 - 3000 fibres per short analysis Long analysis mode doubles the numbers. Duration of an analysis Short analysis appr. 8 min, long analysis appr. 15 min. Abstract: Fibre dimensions play a crucial role particularly in the development of strength, optical and surface properties of paper. The papermaking potential of wood fibres is primarily dictated by cell wall thickness and fibre length, fibre width being less important. Fibre length can be measured reliably with currently available fibre analysers. For length measurement applications a resolution of 50 [Symbol Not Transcribed]m is good enough. The measurement of cross-directional fibre dimensions requires a 1-[Symbol Not Transcribed]m resolution.
