  • Description: Then there are the keynote speakers-these are the heavy hitters of the industry, and the audience listens carefully here in an attempt to divine something noteworthy that has not previously been made public. In general, these speakers will disappoint in that regard as they have been heavily coached by legal counsel. The quality of these presentations varies widely, from serious and provocative to cliched and foolish. One executive orated in favor of "innovation." Duh! One of the most startling speeches in 1987 was delivered by a Brazilian executive who asserted that "developed nations must cut their steelmaking capacity because the developing countries cannot interrupt their industrial development-they need the sales to retire their debt." A truly radical suggestion!
