[Also in Group XXX] In a machine for clearing, screening and spreading ballast cleared away from beneath railway sleepers (see Group XXX) the machine, when inoperative, is propelled along the track at a certain speed by a power unit 38 of any suitable description driving wheels 3 through any convenient transmission means 39 provided with a clutch and gearbox and when operative the power unit 38 drives an electric generator 40 which supplies current to drive the various mechanisms and motors 41, 42 which through reduction gears propel the machine along the track at a speed lower than the certain speed. Fig. 2 shows the forward end of the machine.
