  • Description: Earnings for US paper and forest companies continued to improve in the fourth quarter on higher volumes and prices for most pulp and paper grades, offsetting continued lower profitability from wood products operations hurt by the downturn in housing. Fourth quarter earnings for a group of 22 publicly traded US paper and forest companies surged 70.1% from a year ago. The collective profit margin of these 22 companies totaled 4.1%, the second straight quarter above 4% and only the second highest level since third quarter 2004. Meanwhile, despite stronger prices for most pulp and paper products, major Canadian pulp, paper and forest product companies in the fourth quarter posted their ninth consecutive unprofitable quarter.
