  • Description: Excerpt from the "Proceedings of the Central Labor Council: March 3, 1915 to May 25, 1921". These are the minutes of the Seattle Central Labor Council's meeting on October 8, 1919. The minutes list the communications received from many individuals and organizations on a wide array of issues, including a request from the Electrical Workers' Local #944 asking that the delegates from Local #77 be unseated "as coming from an outlaw local", which was referred to the Strike & Grievance Committee, and a suggestion from Oscar H. McGill that five delegates be elected to "act upon committee of 15 to direct and assist in making 'Co-operation' the next step", which is approved (the election is held immediately). Many delegate reports mention a financial contribution made by their union to the Seattle Union Record. The Kent factory workers report that they've elected the first official on a "Triple Alliance ticket" -- John O. Edwards, who is the new Commissioner of Waterways for District #2 in Renton. The Resolutions Committee recommends passage of a resolution protesting the role of the national media in provoking war with Mexico, which carries after being amended. Under "new business", a motion is made to ask the Union Record to reprint a resolution written by employees of the Post-Intelligencer, which is amended adding a request to reprint "that part of Selvin's ad referring to putting to death labor men", but after "a lengthy discussion" the matter is tabled. The minutes are signed by James A. Duncan, Council Secretary., Another account of this meeting is given in a report filed by the labor spy, "Agent #106", which was given to Broussais Beck and dated December 4, 1919. The report resides in the Broussais C. Beck papers at the University of Washington's Special Collections Library, and appears online in the U.W.'s Digital Collections under the title "Labor spy report by Agent #106 to Broussais Beck, December 4, 1919" (Digital ID number PNW00886).
