  • Description: The connection between language and culture is reflected in the phraseology of a particular language. While certain idioms are universal, having derived from the same source or become established in a language as a result of language contact, numerous other idioms are culture-specific. This article examines the cultural specificity of English and Slovene onomastic idioms and special attention is paid to the onyms, which often denote a person or place that is well known in a given language community or culture. In such cases the use of an idiom is limited to a national or local context, and the onym is more or less unknown outside of the language community. This causes difficulties in understanding such idioms.
