Description:
A paradigm of affective relations based on the individual's orientation to the environment is presented, emphasizing distinctions among situational relevance, salience & pertinence of value in COMM. The concepts of attitude & opinion are defined & the usefulness of the salience-pertinence distinction in studying attitude changes is examined. The content of COMM is stated to consist of any or all of the following: the 7 elements in the paradigm for the evaluative mode; the discrimination based on that orientation; & a report, verbal or otherwise, of the action or directed behavior based on that discrimination. Models of affective behavior focusing on coorientation & soc interaction are analyzed & the r between information gain & attitude change is discussed. Quantitative & qualitative validity problems in the analysis of COMM behavior are pointed out. The paradigm offered is stated to provide a basis for the construction of a theory to trace the process of behavior through sequences of orientations which show the individual in both the evaluative & goal-seeking modes. For a theory of COMM 2 questions are important: (1) How well do values predict behavior? & (2) How well do behaviors predict values? M. Maxfield.
